At G HOME, every gourd creation is the result of thoughtful exploration—connecting history, culture, and artisanship. Below is a glimpse into our four key steps: Research, Sourcing, Making, and Collaboration.
1. Research
Our journey begins with archaeological studies, folk traditions, and worldwide mythologies. Gourds have been used for thousands of years across diverse cultures—for vessels, instruments, ceremonial objects, and beyond. By immersing ourselves in these stories, we uncover design cues and symbolic meanings that make each G HOME piece more than just décor—it becomes a link to humanity’s collective past.
2. Sourcing
We try our best to source our material locally, therefore most of our gourds come from trusted farms in Maryland and Pennsylvania. They are shipped to us when it is cleaned gourds, but any pieces with a distressed look would be handpicked by our core team when we visit the farm! We therefore have proudly developed a good relationship with the gourd farmer community as time progress.
In other cases when a particular characteristic is needed for strength or cultural authenticity, we may source our gourds from farther regions because the gourd’s form and character can vary greatly by region or continent.
3. Making
All pieces are designed by our founder, Haoying, who translates historical and cultural research into contemporary forms. She and a rotating team of makers then handcraft each gourd into vases, incense holders, and more—carefully carving, cleaning, or specifically treating the surface while honoring the gourd’s natural beauty. This hands-on approach keeps the spirit of traditional craft alive, ensuring each piece retains its organic character.
4. Collaboration
At G HOME, we thrive on creative synergy. Beyond our studio’s internal process, we actively reach out to—and welcome interest from—various gourd experts, artisans, and cultural practitioners worldwide. By tapping into their expertise—be it a new carving technique, a fermentation process, or artistic tradition—we expand our knowledge and spark fresh ideas. These collaborations allow us to continuously evolve while respecting and uplifting the global network of gourd craftsmanship.
